About Honzome |

Honzome | Hone・Zoh・Meh

The delicate and vibrant patterns of the honzome dyeing technique trace back to the Edo Period. Honzome dyeing is commonly seen in summer kimonos or tenugui, the traditional Japanese towel. Elegant designs are made by creating moulds on the fabric, and filling the mould with poured dye. The resulting fabric is vibrant on one side and colorless on the other, as no color bleeds through. Beyond 1890, chemical dyes became popularized and the honzome dyeing technique gradually dwindled. However, honzome dyeing is still used in addition to various other dyeing techniques, with traditional fabrics in particular dyed with the honzome technique. Create your own tenugui towel with the traditional Japanese honzome dyeing technique and get the chance to see this vibrant and soft Japanese traditional craft.

Things to note |

  • Please make your booking at least 24 hours in advance.
