About Sashimono |

Sashimono | Sah-shee-mo-no
Japan's Interlocking wooden craftwork

Discover how wood can be precisely joined together to create beautiful crafts. The classical art of woodworking is a long-time Japanese tradition where wood is joined together without the use of nails. Developed as Buddhism was introduced to Japan between the 10th and 12th century, sashimono gained popularity among the imperial court, nobles and monks. The elegant, seamless edges offered minimalistic beauty to tea ceremonies and imperial court lifestyles. Later on, this style of woodworking was commonly utilized by samurai warriors during the Edo period. The practice of sashimono is still alive today, with individual craftsmen overseeing the whole process of the production, using Japanese wood exclusively. In Detouur’s workshop, learn from a sashimono craftsman about this tradition and its delicate beauty.
